Activist Urges President Kiir to Appoint Woman as Finance Minister

Rumbek, South Sudan — A South Sudanese civil society activist has called on President Salva Kiir to appoint a woman as the country’s next Minister of Finance and Economic Planning, arguing that male leadership has repeatedly failed to stabilize the economy and ease the hardships facing citizens.
Angelina Adhel Malual, the chairperson of the Civil Society Organization Network in Lakes State, made the remarks in an interview with Radio Tamazuj on Thursday. She said that since South Sudan gained independence in 2011, the finance ministry has been dominated by men who, she claimed, have mismanaged public resources and failed to ensure accountability.
“This ministry has been corrupted by men. Let it be given to us women so we can also look into it,” Adhel said. “Women are managers at home and know how to provide even when there is little. We care for our people to eat.”
Adhel emphasized that women have proven capable in leadership roles across various sectors and should now be given the opportunity to lead the finance ministry to promote transparency and effective resource management.
Her remarks come amid growing public frustration over South Sudan’s economic challenges, including high inflation, delayed salaries, and widespread poverty.
