President Salva Kiir Fires First Vice President Dr. Benjamin Bol Mel
JUBA, South Sudan — November 12, 2025:
President Salva Kiir Mayardit has dismissed First Vice President Dr. Benjamin Bol Mel, in a major political shake-up that has taken many by surprise.
According to a presidential decree read on state-owned SSBC Television on Wednesday evening, Dr. Bol Mel has been relieved of his duties with immediate effect. The decree did not specify the reason for his removal, but sources within the presidency say it follows growing tensions over policy disagreements and administrative decisions.
Dr. Bol Mel, who was appointed as First Vice President last year, was seen as one of the most influential figures in the government and within the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM). His tenure has been marked by both praise for his economic initiatives and criticism from senior party members who accused him of overstepping his mandate.
Political analysts say the move could signal a broader reshuffle within the top leadership as President Kiir consolidates power ahead of the upcoming transitional roadmap discussions.
The office of the presidency has yet to announce who will replace Dr. Bol Mel as First Vice President. Meanwhile, the dismissed vice president has not issued any public statement regarding his removal.
This development is expected to stir renewed debate over power dynamics within the SPLM and the unity government, coming at a time when the country is still navigating the delicate implementation of the 2018 peace agreement.
