Maj. Gen. Kon John Akot Reinstated as Director General of Traffic Police, Celebrations Erupt in Juba

Juba, South Sudan Celebrations continued late into the evening as Maj. Gen. Kon John Akot, together with his family, team, and supporters, marked his reinstatement to Buluk Headquarters as the Director General of Traffic Police.

Maj. Gen. Akot officially reported back to his office in Buluk today following a week of administrative uncertainty. Earlier this week, he had been assigned to Aweil as Police Commissioner, a directive he reportedly objected to. A circulating letter, attributed to him, suggested he would only take directives from President Salva Kiir Mayardit rather than the Inspector General of Police (IGP. The general later denied authoring the statement.

With his return to Buluk now confirmed, sources say the IGP is expected to issue a formal written reappointment letter on Monday morning.

Supporters of Maj. Gen. Akot describe his reinstatement as a “victory,” with celebrations across parts of Juba reflecting the strong backing he continues to enjoy.
