The family of South Sudanese comedian Amath Jok has accused the National Security Service (NSS) of subjecting her to torture that resulted in a miscarriage while in detention.
AmathJok was reportedly arrested on 10 November after making remarks during a live TikTok broadcast in which she allegedly insulted President Salva Kiir while defending former Vice President Benjamin Bol Mel.
She was released shortly afterward but later rearrested under unclear circumstances.A family member told the media that relatives and friends were denied access to the comedian throughout her detention.
The family says they were shocked to learn AmathJok had suffered a miscarriage during what she described as severe torture inside an NSS facility.“My sister told us she was tortured badly until she miscarried a three-month-old pregnancy,” the relative said, adding that Jok was only allowed medical attention after the incident.
She has since been discharged from hospital and is recovering at home but remains in pain. The family is calling on authorities to launch an independent investigation into the alleged abuse and to hold those responsible accountable.
NSS spokesperson David Kumuri could not be reached for comment.
