At least 12 South Sudanese nationals have been killed and 40 others injured following a deadly road accident in neighboring Sudan, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation has confirmed.
The tragic incident occurred on January 7, 2026, in Dueim city, White Nile State, when two passenger buses collided along a major roadway.
One of the buses was transporting South Sudanese returnees traveling back home.In a press release issued on January 8, the Ministry expressed deep condolences to the families of those who lost their lives and extended best wishes for a speedy recovery to the injured.
“The Government of the Republic of South Sudan shares the pain and sorrow of the bereaved families during this difficult moment,” the statement read.
The Ministry also emphasized the need for improved coordination between Sudanese and South Sudanese authorities, particularly in matters concerning the safe repatriation and movement of citizens across borders.
According to the statement, the situation is being closely monitored through South Sudan’s Embassy in Port Sudan, which is liaising with Sudanese authorities to follow up on the condition of the injured and provide necessary assistance.
Road accidents remain a persistent challenge along major transit routes used by returnees and travelers between Sudan and South Sudan, often due to overcrowding, poor road conditions, and weak enforcement of traffic regulations.
The Ministry said further updates will be communicated as more information becomes available.
