Yei, South Sudan – Authorities in Yei River County have destroyed a large quantity of seized marijuana, locally known as bangi, as part of an intensified campaign to combat the illegal drug trade and substance abuse.

The destruction exercise was conducted in the presence of county officials, security personnel, and members of the media, demonstrating the local government’s commitment to tackling drug-related crimes.

Speaking during the event, Yei River County Commissioner Samuel Henry Malimbo warned that drug abuse remains a growing threat to public safety, particularly among young people. He stressed that anyone found selling, distributing, or trafficking marijuana will be arrested and prosecuted in accordance with the law.

Meanwhile, police disclosed that an unidentified suspect recently threw marijuana over the fence of Yei Prison before fleeing the scene. Authorities said investigations are underway to identify and apprehend those responsible.

County officials have also appealed to parents, community leaders, and residents to play an active role in protecting young people by reporting suspected drug trafficking and other illegal activities to the relevant authorities.

The anti-drug campaign is part of ongoing efforts by local authorities to promote a safer and healthier community across Yei River County.
