Igga Demands Urgent Payment of Salary Arrears as SPLM Charts 2026 Election Strategy

Juba, South Sudan November 19, 2025 Vice President James Wani Igga has called for the prompt clearance of long-overdue salary and arrears payments to civil servants, making it a central demand as the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM) sets its agenda ahead of the 2026 general elections.

Speaking shortly after being sworn in as First Deputy Chairman of the SPLM, Igga described addressing unpaid public salaries and restoring essential public services as a mandatory obligation that cannot be postponed. “Our immediate mandatory function is to pay the long-delayed civil servants’ salaries along with the delivery of dire services to our citizens,” he said.

His remarks come amid mounting economic hardship for public workers, many of whom have gone without pay for extended periods.

At the same event, President Salva Kiir who also serves as Chairman of the SPLM urged party leaders to unify members and intensify grassroots engagement. He emphasized revitalizing the SPLM by reinforcing its core principles and improving the delivery of basic services to win renewed public support ahead of the 2026 polls.

Igga’s call aligns with earlier SPLM efforts to respond to the country’s economic crisis. In a January 2025 party meeting, he urged prioritizing the payment of salaries and arrears, framing it as part of a national recovery strategy.  The SPLM leadership has also unveiled plans to reorganize and train cadres in preparation for election campaigning, according to statements made earlier this year.
