SPLA-IO Captures SSPDF Garrison in Yuai, Jonglei State

Jonglei State — Forces of the Sudan People’s Liberation Army-In Opposition (SPLA-IO), loyal to First Vice President Riek Machar, have captured the South Sudan People’s Defense Forces (SSPDF) garrison in Yuai, the administrative headquarters of Uror County in Jonglei State.

Local officials and residents confirmed on Friday that the town fell after days of intense fighting between the rival forces. The capture of Yuai follows the recent takeover of Waat, further consolidating SPLA-IO control over large parts of the Lou Nuer heartland.

Military sources say the loss of Yuai represents a significant setback for the SSPDF, as the garrison was considered a key strategic foothold in the area.

The latest developments highlight rising tensions and renewed armed confrontations in Jonglei and the broader Upper Nile region, raising concerns over civilian safety and regional stability.

Authorities have not yet released official casualty figures, and access to the affected areas remains limited due to ongoing insecurity.
