Unannounced U.S. Peacekeeper Withdrawal from South Sudan Raises Concerns Amid Ongoing Needs

The U.S. government has recently pulled a group of peacekeepers from the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS), doing so without issuing any public statement or explanation. Neither UNMISS nor the U.S. contingent has officially addressed the move. A U.N. spokesperson in New York confirmed on Tuesday that the withdrawal is temporary.

Edward H. Carpenter, a former U.N. peacekeeper and current director of World Without War, voiced serious concern over the decision.

“As someone who once served in South Sudan as a peacekeeper, I am deeply troubled by the quiet withdrawal of the small team of American military officers supporting UNMISS,” Carpenter said. “Their expertise in planning, operations, and logistics is more critical now than ever.”
