Dozens of War-Wounded Refugees Receive Emergency Care in Western Ethiopia – MSF

Since Monday, Doctors Without Borders (MSF) teams in Gambella, western Ethiopia, have been responding to an influx of war-wounded refugees escaping violence near the South Sudan border. A total of 39 injured individuals have so far arrived seeking critical medical attention.

Upon arrival at the Mattar Health Center, MSF’s emergency medical team began treating refugees suffering from injuries sustained during the ongoing conflict. Following further alerts about more casualties, the team mobilized a search operation in Moan, Burbeiye, and Mattar town, where they found additional injured persons and provided immediate medical assistance.

Several of the patients had sustained severe gunshot wounds that posed life-threatening risks, requiring urgent medical treatment. Others, who were less critically wounded, were stabilized on-site and are now under close observation after receiving initial care.

The resurgence of violence along the border continues to affect both the refugee population and host communities, sharply increasing the need for emergency health services in the area.

MSF teams remain actively present on the ground, delivering lifesaving support to those in critical need
