Juba, South Sudan October 23, 2025:
The Sudan People’s Liberation Movement-In Opposition (SPLM-IO) has announced key changes within its military leadership. According to a statement issued by First Deputy Chairman Hon. Nathaniel Oyet Pierino, two senior generals have been appointed to acting positions in the SPLA-IO command structure.
Lt. Gen. Alfred Futuyo Karaba, the former Governor of Western Equatoria State, has been appointed as the Acting Deputy Chief of Staff for Operations. Meanwhile, Lt. Gen. John Both Teny has been named the Acting Deputy Chief of Staff for Administration and Finance.
The appointments come as part of ongoing efforts to strengthen the SPLA-IO’s command and enhance coordination within its military ranks. The move is also seen as a step toward revitalizing the movement’s leadership and operational effectiveness.
SPLM-IO sources indicate that the restructuring aims to ensure greater efficiency and readiness as the group continues to engage in the implementation of the Revitalized Agreement on the Resolution of the Conflict in South Sudan (R-ARCSS).
Both Gen. Futuyo and Gen. Teny are expected to assume their new responsibilities immediately.
