The International Criminal Court (ICC) on Tuesday handed a 20-year prison sentence to Ali Muhammad Ali Abd-Al-Rahman, a senior leader of Sudan’s notorious Janjaweed militia, for war crimes and crimes against humanity committed in Darfur over two decades ago.
Abd-Al-Rahman, 76, appeared in court dressed in a blue suit and tie, standing silently as presiding judge Joanna Korner delivered the verdict. The court found him guilty of personally carrying out brutal beatings — including attacks using an axe — and issuing orders that led to multiple executions during the height of the Darfur conflict.
The ruling marks one of the most significant ICC judgments related to atrocities in Darfur, offering a measure of justice to victims who have waited years for accountability.
