A Member of Parliament representing Cueibet County has been shot dead in a targeted attack at his residence in Juba, authorities and local sources confirmed on Wednesday.
Unidentified gunmen stormed the home of Hon. Luka Mathen late Tuesday night in the Gudele neighborhood, opening fire and killing him instantly inside his own compound.
Sources close to the family said the assailants fled the scene immediately after the attack.
No arrests have been made so far, and security agencies have yet to release details regarding the identity of the attackers or the motive behind the killing.
Hon. Mathen served as a representative of Cueibet County in the Council of States, where he was known for his involvement in legislative and community affairs.
His killing has sent shockwaves across political circles and raised renewed concerns over insecurity in the capital.
Residents of Gudele reported hearing gunshots late at night, prompting fear and panic in the area. Security forces later cordoned off the compound as investigations began.
As of publication time, the government has not issued an official statement.
Calls are growing for a swift and transparent investigation to bring the perpetrators to justice.
The assassination adds to a troubling pattern of violent attacks targeting public figures in Juba, underscoring persistent security challenges in South Sudan’s capital.
