In a dramatic development in the high-profile trial of suspended First Vice President Dr. Riek Machar and seven co-accused, the Special Court in Juba on Monday heard digital forensic evidence suggesting communications and financial links to the deadly March 2025 Nasir garrison attack.
The case, now in its 46ᵗʰ session before Presiding Judge James Alala, featured detailed testimony from a cyber-forensics expert brought from South Africa, who traced vital data extracted from mobile phones and digital devices allegedly linked to one of the accused.
Forensic Evidence Presented:
According to the expert, three mobile phones recovered from Mam Pal, one of the defendants, were analyzed under strict chain-of-custody protocols.
Key findings included:
Text messages appearing to link the defendant to real-time information about the attack, including messages stating, “The buffalo has been killed, and our White Army is now celebrating.” WhatsApp exchanges showing updates on the arrest of co-accused Puot Kang Chuol and a list of casualties from the Nasir assault.
A $15,000 transfer to an individual in the United Arab Emirates, accompanied by photos of ammunition.
The expert noted that only material relevant to the case was extracted from the devices, excluding personal data such as family photos.
Defense Raises Detention Concerns
Before the forensic testimony, Machar’s defence team filed formal complaints alleging harsh and degrading treatment of detained defendants during security searches, including confiscation of personal papers and restrictions on attire.
Prosecution representatives dismissed these claims, stressing that the accused are not shackled in court, wear their own clothes, and receive daily access to food and sunlight.
Next Court Session:
Judge Alala adjourned the proceedings and announced that the cyber-forensics expert will continue testimony next Wednesday, with further digital evidence expected to be presented.
