Young people across Africa and beyond are being encouraged to rethink agriculture not as a struggle of the past, but as one of the greatest opportunities of the future. In a powerful message titled “The Future is in the Soil,” Wang D. Jock called on the next generation to see farming as a path toward innovation, entrepreneurship, and leadership.
According to Jock, society has long promoted the idea that success only exists in cities and office jobs, while agriculture has been viewed as outdated and difficult. However, he argues that the real transformation of the future is happening in the fields through technology-driven farming and sustainable food production.
“Agriculture is no longer just about a hoe and hard labor; it is about innovation, technology, and entrepreneurship,” he said.
Jock explained that modern farmers are more than laborers. They are business leaders, environmental protectors, and innovators responsible for shaping food security and economic growth.
He highlighted three major reasons why young people should consider agriculture:
- Independence: Farming offers opportunities to build businesses and become self-employed.
- Innovation: Young people can use modern technology such as drones, smart irrigation systems, and digital tools to transform farming.
- Purpose: Agriculture plays a critical role in feeding communities and protecting the environment for future generations.
The CEO of Nile Green Pulse also warned that while the global population continues to rise, the number of people producing food is steadily declining. He described this as a major challenge that young people are well-positioned to solve with their creativity, energy, and technological skills.
“Don’t wait for an opportunity to find you. Plant one,” Jock stated, encouraging youth to take bold steps into agribusiness and modern farming.
Quoting renowned agricultural scientist M. S. Swaminathan, he added: “If agriculture goes wrong, nothing else will have a chance to go right.”
The message has sparked conversations about the importance of empowering youth in agriculture and investing in sustainable farming solutions to secure the future of food production.
